Who We Are

The Feminist Therapy Institute is a national organization with a modest international membership. It was created to provide an organizational home for advanced feminist therapists. Many of us also practice as educators and activists.

Through our Advanced Feminist Therapy Institutes (otherwise known as AFTIs), conferences held every one to two years, and our publications, members contribute to the increasing body of  knowledge and practice known as feminist therapy. We work to enrich this theory and advance standards of practice.

We welcome psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, counselors, nurses, educators, researchers, and others who seriously work towards an end to oppression in society and for non-oppressive practice within the field of psychotherapy. Our therapeutic orientations and our concepts of feminism are diverse and inclusive.

All of us have experience in the application of feminist principles in our practices. A not-for-profit organization, The Feminist Therapy Institute was incorporated in 1983 in Colorado.
