Over the years, we have recognized that there are several tensions inherent in our conferences. When these tensions are balanced, we create a learning environment that nurtures and excites us in our work. For instance, we come to AFTI (Advanced Feminist Therapy Institute) to be fed with new ideas and theories. We want intellectual stimulation. We strive to provide time for reactions to the presentations, seeking balance between content and process. On the other hand, we treasure time to play and to get to know each other.
We come together from a variety of backgrounds. Some participants have easy access to research libraries and journals, while others don't. Some are academic and theoretical in their approaches, while others are more political and experiential. Some have university affiliations and others are full time therapists. We have different ways of learning and listening. Because we truly like and deeply respect each other and our differing ways of seeing the world, we attempt to question, confront and support each other with clarity and kindness. AFTI participants show commitment and respect to the presenters and each other by attending and participating in the entire program
As an organization, we like the intimacy of a small membership but we also want the stimulation and excitement of new members and participants.
